When The Weather Outside Is Frightful

With the winter months upon us, your home heating system is very important. Small problems can become large in a hurry and leave you out in the cold. Below are a few things to have maintenanced or repaired to keep you and your family warm and safe.

Cycling Heat — When a furnace keeps turning on and off, it is usually due to short cycling. This is the term used to describe problems originating from within the heating system. If short cycling is not promptly diagnosed and corrected, it could cause permanent damage to your heating unit and higher utility bills. The average heating system cycles on and off three to six times every hour. A diagnostic will be run by your heating professional to test the system, address the problem, and repair what is needed to keep your system running optimally.

Thermostat — Whenever a home comfort system refuses to turn on when it should, the usual conclusion is that the system has broken. However, the problem could be that the thermostat isn’t working right. Sometimes this is due to a miscalibration in the unit that makes it read the temperature incorrectly and consequently not turn the heater/AC on when it should. At other times, wiring defects can cause the thermostat to lose its connection to the system. Your technician will check all wires, calibrations, and cleanliness to ensure a reliable thermostat.

Sudden Loss of Heat — Most furnace issues are caused by bad cleaning practices and are easily remedied. While losing your heat suddenly may set off panic of a high repair bill, or having to replace the entire unit, that is usually not the case. Often the furnace door is not replaced properly after a filter cleaning and the cut-out switch will prevent the furnace from coming on. A malfunctioning pilot light or ignition system may also be the issue. This means you need some work from a professional, as ignition and pilot light work is not a job for an amateur. An inspection of your gas furnace or other heating system now can prevent sudden loss of precious warmth when you most need it.
